Grover Cleveland became the 22nd US President in 1885 – and today, his name is not a name to conjure with. And yet he was the first Democratic President to hold office after the Civil War – a war after which the Democrats were largely seen as the party of the defeated southern Confederacy. How would Cleveland negotiate the potentially delicate situation this caused, and how would be use his executive powers to fashion the US in the political mould he believed in? In this talk Simon will explore the life and legacy of Cleveland – who also holds the accolade of being the only President to be voted out, and then voted in again four years later…the only one, that is, so far…
