This course is provided for existing Federation Treasurers – Assistant Treasurers are welcome to attend but we ask that only one person per federation attends each session. Please ensure your Federation role is added to your MCS profile to enable us to verify your eligibility for this training course. 

We are pleased to be working with the Directory of Social Change to offer this online session. Please ensure you read the course description, including aims and objectives prior to booking. The partner trainers we are working with are experts in their field and, while they have been briefed on the structure of the WI, this session will not be WI specific.

Have you worked in finance previously? Are you familiar with finance reports? Have you prepared budgets or cashflow forecasts? Would you like to expand on this knowledge to support your role as Federation Treasurer? This course is for you! 

The aim of these sessions is to enable Treasurers of UK charities to get a better understanding of the legal obligations that boards have in relation to managing the finances of charities, and understand what they, as treasurer can do to guide the board in carrying out these obligations.   

The session will enable participants to: 

  1. Have a better understanding of how the legal obligations of the collective board translate to best practice for treasurers working with other (paid) support 

  2. Critically explore what the board does now against good practice 

  3. Identify ways in which financial controls, systems and reports can be improved 

  4. Identify financial management priorities for their board 

The session will also explore best practice within the charity sector regarding the role of charity treasurers in advising and contributing to board decisions, and overseeing operational financial matters: budgeting, reporting and establishing relevant controls within the organisation. 


Participants will leave the programme with a good understanding of: 

  • Charity commission requirements regarding producing financial statements and related disclosures that charity trustees need to make  

  • Recommended practice regarding setting up and monitoring financial controls within charities, and how boards can oversee such controls as operationalised by charity staff 

  • The common risks that charities face (varying depending on size and profile) and good practice in managing, and reporting on identified risks. 

  • The board’s responsibility for managing strategic risks; the role of the treasurer 

  • Financial reporting statutory disclosures, year-end issues.  The Trustees’ Annual Report 

  • Board assurance relating to the financial aspects: role of internal and external audit 


Industry relevant examples will be used to enable participants to engage with the content. The session will also make reference to financial statements that are relevant to participants to enable them to appreciate how legal and good practice translate to meaningful finance-based reports. 

This is a participatory training session and to ensure participants to feel able to ask questions and share experiences freely, this session will not be recorded.


The Trainer - Jacqueline Williams

The session will be facilitated by Jacqueline Williams a governance and leadership consultant who has 20+ years working with not for profits. Her areas of specialisation are legal responsibilities of boards and good practice in relation to financial governance. She regularly carries out governance reviews, training for Boards and staff, facilitating awaydays where organisations seek to develop and structure their strategies, develop appropriate key performance indicators and performance management structures and processes. As a certified coach, Jacqueline also provides support through executive coaching for trustees and members of senior leadership teams.
