The first President of the United States, George Washington, was famously opposed to the formation of political parties; favouring instead the bipartisan principles which had been built into the framing of the constitution.  But by the time he stood down at the end of his second term, the building blocks of a two-party system were firmly in place.  So how did these parties form, what did they stand for, and who were the leading figures in each?  And perhaps just as importantly, how might they help us understand the nature of party politics in the US today? Join Simon to find out.
