Our US story over recent months has focused on the agreement of the constitution of the United States, and its first “real world” implementation under President George Washington.  But the next real test of that constitution would be whether it could weather the transition of power from one leader to another.  In this lecture, Simon will examine the very end of the 1700s, and two such transfers of power, first from Washington to John Adams, and then from John Adams to Thomas Jefferson.  Along the way we will examine the turbulence of America’s relationship with France as the French Revolution unfolded, and the continuing impact of the newly-emerged party system on US politics.  As a new century dawned, the US would be faced with fresh but no less daunting challenges.
