Woodrow Wilson, the 28th President of the United States, faced perhaps more than his fair share of challenges.  A Democrat, he succeeded William H Taft, who had managed to drive something of a wedge between the conservative and progressive wings of his own Republican Party.  Elected with a thumping majority of electoral college votes, Wilson pressed his advantage and introduced significant tax innovations, especially in relation to income tax.  When the First World War broke out, he initially kept America neutral, before leading the nation into the conflict in 1917, early in his second term.  Ironically, as a key architect of the peace agreement with Germany in 1919, he was unable to persuade the US Senate to ratify it; before finally ill-health overtook him and prevented his considering running for a third term.  Join Simon to chart the changing fortunes of the Wilson presidency, and to explore the legacy he left for interwar America.
