In 1800, as the new century dawned, Thomas Jefferson was elected President of the United States, a Republican replacing the Federalist John Adams.  His election ushered in a quarter-century of Republican Presidents, and spelt the end of the short-lived Federalist Party.  So what did the beginning of this new political era look like? What did it mean for democratic participation in the USA?  What changes did it herald for an economy which had boomed under Federalist Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton?  And what path did the US begin to forge in relation to foreign policy, and in particular the Old World of Europe which so many American immigrants had sought to leave behind?
