With so many films available on platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and Sky, finding a good movie can feel overwhelming. To help you skip the indecision, join us at the WI Film Club – Beyond the Screen! Join our host Vicky for an engaging discussion about the story and themes of the film in a friendly and supportive online session. This could even inspire you to start your own film club within your WI.
October is Black History Month in the UK, and to honour this important occasion, we'll be screening the film Hidden Figures.
Important Note: This film is not available on free streaming platforms, so you may need to rent or purchase it. While we usually prefer free options, we believe Hidden Figures is a must-see. If you have subscriptions to platforms like Amazon, Disney+, or Apple TV, check there. You can also check your local library, as many offer films for borrowing.
Hidden Figures tells the inspiring true story of the Black women who were instrumental in the success of the space race in the 1950s. Based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly (which we highly recommend), the film addresses themes of racism, segregation, and sexism from that era. It has received numerous awards and critical acclaim since its release.
Additionally, during the same week as our film club, Dr Ruth Stalker-Firth will be giving a talk titled "When Women Were Computers." We believe this talk will enhance the themes explored in Hidden Figures, so we encourage you to attend if possible.
Where to Watch:
Hidden Figures is available on Disney+ - Watch Hidden Figures | Disney+ (disneyplus.com)
Hidden Figures it can be rented or purchased from Amazon - Watch Hidden Figures | Prime Video (amazon.co.uk)
Hidden Figures is also available on Apple TV - Hidden Figures - Apple TV (UK)
Please watch the film ahead of time so we can discuss it together.
