In 1905, George Bernard Shaw said, “A child who has never seen a pantomime is a public danger”. My fascination with panto began at the age of 4 when I was taken to my first panto at Broadway, no, not New York, but the one in Worcestershire. My work at the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon encouraged me to expand my interest, but this time with the opportunity to see, and work, behind the scenes. This grew to a fascination for the history of pantomime, dating right back to Ancient Greece and Rome, via the Italian Comedia dell’arte and the strong tradition of British panto.
‘He’s Behind You’ includes the history of panto, my experiences behind the scenes, past and present panto stars, and its future in these days of ever-changing forms of entertainment. The accompanying handout gives a recap on major historical panto moments and details of some of the pantomimes you can visit around the UK, together with a short pictorial quiz ‘There is nothing like a Dame’.
