We all know of at least some of them – those famous opening lines from great speeches in Shakespeare’s plays. “To be or not to be…”, “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?”, “Now is the winter of our discontent…” and so on. But often our recollection of those speeches stops just there, with that opening line. Imagine you are the actor who has to go on stage not only to utter those immortal lines, but also to imbue them and the rest of the speech with emotion and meaning? In this lecture, Simon will explore these and others of Shakespeare’s most famous speeches; together we will read them, exploring beyond the opening line, unpacking the details of their rich and varied meanings, and putting them in the context of the broader dramas from which they are drawn.
