Part one explored LBJ’s path to the presidency, in particular the political experience gained at local, state and national level which gave him the nous needed to join JFK’s presidential ticket.  Sworn into the office of President aboard Air Force One in the immediate aftermath of JFK’s shocking assassination, Johnson had to immediately get to work not only pulling the nation together, but also dealing with the very real political issues facing what was now the LBJ administration, amongst them the growing pressure for civil rights legislation, and also the need to formulate US policy in relation to Vietnam.  In this talk, Simon will track LBJ’s presidential career, his retirement, and his legacy.
