Available spaces: 249
Host: Simon Gregor
The War of 1812 was catalysed by disputes with Britain over freedom of the seas and free trade, but as we saw in last month's talk it also drew in concerns about the activities of the British across the US's southern border with what was then Spanish Florida...and even a desire to make Canada a part of the United States, which may sound familiar to observers of C21 politics! The United States entered the war with Britain very much as the underdog, and there was a real prospect that the fledgling republican experiment might start to unravel. In the end, the US prevailed - and in this talk, Simon will explore how and why this was possible, despite the odds being stacked against the newly independent nation.
