JFK, as he would be known to history, had a presidency which was tragically cut short by his assassination in 1963.  Despite occupying the role for less than 3 years, he left a mark on American politics which has been profound.  In common with many of our other Presidents, his legacy was in part shaped by his time before entering the Oval Office, but in the case of Kennedy he also continued to assert a powerful force on American politics after his death.  In this first part of two, we will consider JFK's life up until the beginning of the 1960s; returning to explore his presidency itself next month.
