Available spaces: 20
Host: Dr Simon Gregor

Over the five years since the WI initiated online learning, Simon has run a variety of literature lectures and study groups, where we have learned about the work of well-known (and sometimes less well-known!) writers.  But have you ever thought about writing something yourself?  If you have, then this course might be for you!  Whether you have written poetry before and are looking to develop your skills, or are wanting to put pen to paper in this way for the first time, this summer school will be a safe space to learn amongst friends and fellow-writers!

We will meet every 2 or 3 days across a two-week period for one hour sessions, between 1:30pm-2:30pm, and explore creative writing together:
  • Part 1 - Monday 18th August
  • Part 2 - Wednesday 20th August
  • Part 3 - Friday 22nd August
  • Bank Holiday Weekend
  • Part 4 - Tuesday 26th August
  • Part 5 - Thursday 28th August
Simon will share some "hints and tips" to help kickstart the writing process, and there will be optional "homework assignments" with writing tasks to focus on.  There will be opportunities along the way to share your writing with others in the group if you wish to, and to get feedback - but with no pressure to do so if you would prefer not to!  The aim is that by the end of the course, you have some tools and ideas to help you feel more confident in writing poetry...and perhaps even to think about submitting some writing to a local magazine or competition!
Please note that although the "lecture style" elements of this course will be recorded, the group-discussion parts will not, in order to be sensitive to the potential confidentiality of the poetic writing which is shared. All sessions will be recorded and emailed to participants within 24 hours.

This course is priced at £15 for WI Members, offering an exclusive discounted rate as a benefit of membership. Non-members are welcome to join at the standard price of £30.

Zoom log in details will be included at the bottom of your confirmation email after you have registered.
