This session is provided for Federation and WI committee members and trustees, and WI Advisers. Please note this training is offered as part of NFWI's commitment to supporting federations and WIs. Places on the course are limited and we ask that you are committed to attending prior to booking. If you have attended a training session covering this topic in the last two years please consider allowing others to attend this session.

We are pleased to be working with Equality & Diversity UK to offer this online session. Please ensure you read the course description, including aims and objectives prior to booking. The partner trainers we are working with are experts in their field and, while they have been briefed on the structure of the WI, these sessions will not be WI specific.

Thursday 23rd January 10am-1pm

Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) training is designed to help learners understand more about their responsibilities for promoting equality, tackling all forms of discrimination and fostering good relationships between diverse groups of people. The learning package covers all areas of equality legislation, policies, processes, procedures and best practice. The course will provide delegates with an understanding of how the values, opinions and prejudices of an individual can influence those around them, and how this can lead to discrimination. Delegates will gain awareness of the value of equality, diversity and inclusion and will be encouraged to promote equal opportunities.

By the end of the training, the delegates will have:

  • raised their understanding of the Equality Act 2010 and the protected groups
  • explored the different types of behaviours that are unlawful and impact on individuals/organisation
  • explored practical strategies to deal effectively with inappropriate language, behaviours, attitudes and banter
  • participated in activities to identify their own biases and to developed strategies for managing/avoiding them
  • an increased awareness of rights and responsibilities and feel confident to challenge inappropriate language/behaviours and actions

To ensure participants to feel able to ask questions and share experiences freely, this session will not be recorded.

Trainer:

Ellie Grady (She/her)

From a very young age, Ellie has been passionate about tackling all forms of discrimination and injustice. She feels her passion for equality, diversity and inclusion is in her DNA.

Ellie worked for several years within the Education Sector where she headed up a large drama department and took on the role of Lead Practitioner for Community, Diversity, and Inclusion. During this time, she introduced new EDI policies and practices to the Academy chain she worked for and delivered in-house training for staff, students and stakeholders.

Ellie chose to leave teaching due to what she saw to be inequalities within the sector. She became an Associate Trainer with EDUK in 2018 where she fine-tuned her particular areas of expertise: EDI best practice, Unconscious Bias and Train the Trainer.
