Franklin D Roosevelt - or FDR as he is better known - is the only man to have been elected President four times, so it is going to take us more than one lecture to explore his life and legacy!  Elected in 1932, he took up office in 1933 in the depths of the Great Depression, and his first task was to address the severe financial plight of many Americans.  By the time his conventional "two terms of service" were up, the world was in the throes of WW2, a conflict which America itself would soon enter, and hence in this crisis FDR stood for and won two more elections.  In this first talk on his career, Simon will examine FDR's early life and his pre-Presidency years, with the aim of understanding what equipped him for the highest executive office at a time of such social, economic and political crisis.
