Host: Dr Simon Gregor

In the second week of our summer series, Simon Gregor turns to Measure for Measure, a thought-provoking play that sits at the crossroads of comedy, drama and moral exploration. Often labelled a “problem play,” it raises powerful questions about justice, power, mercy and personal ethics.

Each weekday from Monday to Friday, join us live from 1:30–2:30pm for an hour-long session. We’ll explore one act of the play per session, with Simon highlighting key scenes and leading discussions on character, structure and meaning. Each class also includes a short thematic talk, drawing connections between the play’s major ideas and the broader world of Shakespeare’s work. There will be time for brief questions at the end of each session.

Whether you’re encountering Measure for Measure for the first time or returning to it, Simon’s accessible and insightful teaching style makes this complex play easy to engage with. There’s no need to read ahead or have the text to hand; key passages will be read aloud and discussed together.

All sessions will be recorded and emailed to participants within 24 hours. The complete week’s recordings will also be available via our Recorded Course listings at the end of the course and can be accessed until the end of September 2025. Feel free to revisit the material in that time or recommend it to others!

This course is priced at £15 for WI Members, offering an exclusive discounted rate as a benefit of membership. Non-members are welcome to join at the standard price of £30.

Zoom log in details will be included at the bottom of your confirmation email after you have registered.
