This course is provided for existing Federation Treasurers, Assistant Treasurers or others expecting to take on the role of Federation Treasurer. We ask that only one person per federation attends each session. Please ensure your Federation role is added to your MCS profile to enable us to verify your eligibility for this training course.
We are pleased to be working with the Directory of Social Change to offer this online session. Please ensure you read the course description, including aims and objectives prior to booking. The partner trainers we are working with are experts in their field and, while they have been briefed on the structure of the WI, this session will not be WI specific.
Monday 24 February 2025 - 9:30am-1pm
Are you a new or potential Federation Treasurer? How well do you understand what being a treasurer means? Have you got little experience of working with financial reports, preparing and using budgets and cash flow forecast as part of the governance team of a registered charity? If you are feeling out of your depth in taking on the role of Federation Treasurer, then this course can help!
The aim of these sessions is to enable Treasurers of UK charities to get a better understanding of the legal obligations that boards have in relation to managing the finances of charities, and understand what they, as treasurer can do to guide the board in carrying out these obligations.
This session will:
provide guidance on what information you need to be confident that you can do the role.
enable you to prepare a Checklist of questions and areas of support you would need in your first 100 (or so) days in the role.
help identify areas of focus as part of your induction to your role on the Board,
appreciate your responsibility for guiding the Board on financial management and reporting issues.
The session will also explore best practice within the charity sector regarding the role of charity treasurers in advising and contributing to board decisions, and overseeing operational financial matters: budgeting, reporting and establishing relevant controls within the organisation.
Outcomes
Participants will leave the programme with a good understanding of:
Charity commission requirements regarding producing financial statements and related disclosures that charity trustees need to make
Recommended practice regarding setting up and monitoring financial controls within charities, and how boards can oversee such controls as operationalised by charity staff
The common risks that charities face (varying depending on size and profile) and good practice in managing, and reporting on identified risks.
Charity law legal compliance relating to charity finances
Best practice for achieving compliance: financial controls, financial systems. Treasurer’s Terms of reference Vs collective responsibility of the board
Budgeting and accounting for charity income and expenditure, budgetary controls and reports
Methodology
Industry relevant examples will be used to enable participants to engage with the content. The session will also make reference to financial statements that are relevant to participants to enable them to appreciate how legal and good practice translate to meaningful finance-based reports.
This is a participatory training session and to ensure participants to feel able to ask questions and share experiences freely, this session will not be recorded.
