Available spaces: 248
Host: Lynda Warren
The history of British cookbooks is a fascinating reflection of the nation’s social, cultural and economic transformations over the centuries. Following an introduction on what makes British cookbooks unique, we discover what is thought to be the first cookbook (c1390), the medieval feasts of the 14th and 15th centuries and the birth of domestic cookbooks in the 16th to 18th centuries. From there we move on to the Victorian era and the explosion of cookbooks and onto the 20th century wartime cookbooks and rationing. Postwar to present shows how globalisation and innovation have influenced British recipes, closing with a reflection on why cookbooks remain essential in British kitchens.
The accompanying handout gives a selection of recipes that have stood the test (and taste) of time and a suggestion of books that will help you discover more about this exciting aspect of our history.
