The WI has an outstanding reputation for supporting members’ during times of change and uncertainty; the positive, motivational, and inspirational ways in which members support one-another, both within their WIs and with fellow members across the country is inspiring and empowering.  In recognition and support of this, the WI Learning Hub is proud to offer members access to the Me, Myself & WI programme from 12th May to 16th May.

We have already seen in this series how the War of 1812 ushered in a new era of confidence and expansion in the United States, including in the construction of roads, railways and canals.  This was accompanied by a boom in industrialisation, the growth of new factories and cities, and all the economic change which goes with that. This talk will explore this industrial growth, with a particular focus on the cotton industry.  We will explore the Cotton Gin, and other new innovations which the US generated.  We will reflect on how these affected the ordinary working people of the country.  And we shall explore cultural changes in working practice, such as the Lowell System, which started to reshape the lives of many urban Americans.
