 The first decade of the 1800s had been characterised by a huge expansion of the USA, with the Louisiana Purchase and the subsequent Lewis-Clark expedition.  But by the 1810s, war was brewing, both in Europe and then in America itself, ultimately leading to the War of 1812 in which Britain and America would once again do battle.  As the British burned much of the new capital in Washington DC to the ground, some must have wondered if the bold new republican experiment in the US was about to fizzle out.  It did not, of course – in this talk Simon will explore the causes, course and consequences of the War of 1812, and how it ultimately led to a firm re-statement of the republican ideals of the new United States of America.
