And so we reach president number 34 – Dwight D Eisenhower.  By the time he assumed the Presidency in 1953, he was already a global figure owing to his leading role in commanding the Normandy Landings in the Second World War.  In this first of two talks on Eisenhower, Simon will examine his early life and young adulthood, his frustration at his (lack of) role in the First World War, and on to his history-making work in the second global conflict.  In next month’s talk, we will turn to his political career as the first Republican president in two decades.
