Whether you are a fan of Shakespeare, Thomas Hardy, and the Romantic poets or someone who dreaded English classes in school, Dr Simon Gregor has an exciting new course for you!

This course outline is loosely based on an A Level English Literature curriculum but has been adapted for an adult audience. The course is structured over two years, divided into six terms, with each term featuring ten weekly classes lasting 90 minutes each. You will not only delve into the works of some of the greatest writers in English literature but, just as importantly, you will develop skills in literary interpretation and analysis that can be applied to any text, whether historical or contemporary.

Modules

The subjects of study are diverse and engaging, with one term dedicated to each of the following topics: The modules will be:

  • Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
  • Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire
  • Thomas Hardy’s Tess of The D’Urbervilles
  • Virginia Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway
  • Poetry of the C21
  • The Great Poets of the Victorian Era

The group size will be limited to enable plenty of time for discussion, and the opportunity to work in smaller break-out groups. Simon is passionate about making literature come alive, and be accessible to all, so expect plenty of fun and engaging debate along the way!

Terms

Future Term dates will be confirmed with exact dates nearer the time, however they will be broken up into the following Terms over the 2 year duration:

  • New Year Term : Mid January – Mid March
  • Spring/Summer Term : Late April/Early May – Late June/Early July
  • Autumn Term : Late September/Early October – Late November/Early December

Course price

The cost of each term will be £150, for ten 90-minute classes.

The terms will be available to book one at a time to break up the cost over the two year time period.

We will do everything we can to keep days, times and the cost the same for your tuition group for the full two years.

Course texts

Please note that in addition to the course cost, you will need to buy a few of the key texts – but never more than one book per term, and Simon will always recommend editions at competitive price points. Simon will sometimes recommend optional further reading or study between classes for those who want to delve deeper.
