Join the Red Roses Yarn Art project to celebrate the Women’s Rugby World Cup
Inspired by the Red Roses’ love of crochet as a team-bonding activity, England Rugby are calling on the nation to take part in a Yarn Art Installation project, designed to inspire the next generation of female players and deliver a legacy for the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025. It’s a great way for the nation to come together, painting the country red and white to show their support for the Red Roses this summer! The England Red Roses rugby team has embraced crocheting as a creative and calming hobby, especially during downtime from intense training and tournaments. This trend has been highlighted by Abby Dow, Hannah Botterman and Tatyana Heard, who have formed an informal Red Roses Crochet Club. Abby Dow in particular is known for her crocheting skills and has crafted items such as a golden rose to commemorate Marlie Packer’s 100th cap.
Knit, crochet, create and get involved with a Yarn Art Installation near you, whether it’s a Red Rose, bunting, or a simple square, all creations are welcomed. Please click on the link below to find out more about this exciting project, including resources, patterns, installation locations.

Try, Tackle, Thread! Northamptonshire Federation rallies for the Women’s Rugby World Cup
Bringing together creativity and community spirit across the county, the Northamptonshire Federation of WIs has already started crocheting and has been a driving force behind a similar yarn art initiative in support of the Women’s World Cup. This fabulous project also includes plans to decorate Northampton’s town centre Fanzone and surrounding areas. Working with local councils, the project is expanding into villages and wider communities, encouraging involvement from everyone in the community to take part. Alongside a push for Post Box Toppers across the county, several Knit and Natter groups are also embracing the spirit of the campaign with their own creative contributions.
Chris Carr, Northamptonshire Federation Chair shared with us…
“Northamptonshire’s members have really stepped up and we are now at the stage of them all putting the finishing touches to their individual projects for each of their allocated set of street railings/furniture before installation, which we are planning to be the last week of July. Once installed, we are aiming to include a Quiz to encourage children to look for certain items along the route too. Prior to that we will be having a display in the town centre for Northampton in Bloom which includes a tree having a cascade of roses draped down the trunk, and similar for the notice board at The Guildhall. Northampton in Bloom is being judged on 7th July, and our display will go up the week before. Fingers crossed our contributions help; the Guildhall is also the venue for the teams Welcome Ceremonies in August!
Furthermore, it is the Town Carnival this coming weekend, and a double decker bus has been wrapped, advertising Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 and we have provided Yarnbombing to decorate the inside. The PWR Loughborough Lightnings Team will be on board. We have also created Rosie, a rugby mascot who is now on tour around the county with me but has been loaned for a trip on the Carnival bus – hoping for some great photos!
I do hope members across the country will engage with the Yarn Art Project – even if it’s a Post Box topper in their local community. It’s been great for us with numbers across completely different sides of the county working together and making new friends.”
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Northamptonshire Federation for their exceptional commitment, time, and creativity in delivering this inspiring project. Their hard work has brought communities together in a unique and meaningful way; a true reflection of WI spirit! We would encourage members, friends and family to visit their installations during the Women’s World Cup and show appreciation for their contribution to this fantastic celebration.
