We are pleased to be working with the Association of Chairs to offer this online session. Please ensure you read the course description, including aims and objectives prior to booking. The partner trainers we are working with are experts in their field and, while they have been briefed on the structure of the WI, this session will not be WI specific.

Monday 13 May 10am-1pm

This online workshop is aimed at Chairs who are new in post or about to take up the post. The session will explore the leadership skills and knowledge that will make you the most effective Chair you can become – and the support that you might need. The emphasis will be on the strengths you bring, as well as the ‘gaps’ you want to fill. And we will offer some tips that might be useful in your particular setting.

The focus is on the role in practice; enabling the trustees to deliver on their legal duties, what good governance is in practice, and building a collaborative and effective governing body.

By the end of this session, you will have:

  • covered the basics regarding the legal duties of the board
  • explored approaches to management of the role based on the Chair’s Compass
  • reflected on approaches to working with the CEO
  • had an opportunity to network with other Chairs
  • considered priorities for your own development and support

The workshop will be led by Beryl Hobson, Director of Professional Governance Services (PGS), and Amber Shotton, AoC Associate.

This is an interactive training session and to ensure participants to feel able to ask questions and share experiences freely, this session will not be recorded.

The Trainers:

Beryl Hobson

Beryl has worked at Board level in three sectors, and as a CEO, Trustee and Chair in the third sector. In her former role as Head of the Large Charities Division at the Charity Commission, Beryl worked with the Boards of many high-profile charities to improve governance. Until late 2015, Beryl was Chair of the National Childbirth Trust (NCT), the UK’s largest parenting charity, and is a former Vice-Chair of Womankind Worldwide. Until 2021, Beryl was the Chair of Queen Victoria Hospital NHS Trust. Beryl is also a trustee of St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne.

Amber Shotton

Amber is an experienced and passionate charity leader based in the Midlands with twenty years’ organisational development experience across the not-for-profit and corporate sectors. She has been a small charity CEO and successfully led charities through significant change, governance reviews, strategy development, income generation, partnerships, restructures and impact evaluation. She understands the challenges of nurturing and growing an organisation whilst managing the realities of limited resources and the constraints this brings.
