William Howard Taft served as a Republican President of the United States when he was elected to succeed Theodore Roosevelt; and yet the man he succeeded would go on to become his nemesis, when he stood against Taft again four years later, splitting the vote and letting Democrat Woodrow Wilson into the White House.  In his four-year term, Taft continued to face the challenges of developing trade and diplomacy with the wider world, in particular with Asia; and closer to home, significant in-fighting between conservative and progressive wings of his own party.  Perhaps he was even relieved to be able to return to “normal” life after four years; but his retirement would not last long, as he was appointed Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court in the 1920s, making him the only person ever to have headed both the Executive and Judicial branches of the US government.  Join Simon for an exploration of the intriguing life and times of America’s 27th President.
